We have a facility that was surveyed two weeks ago by TJC. The facility was cited ( EC.02.06.01 EP 1)for not having their patient beds bolted to the floor. Has anyone else experienced this? Do other facilities have their beds bolted to the floor? Any feedback is appreciated.

Did they determine that not bolting them down was a safety issue? We have what we call "high risk" rooms, about 4 per unit, where we have patients on statuses or who are highly acute reside. Other than those specific rooms, none of the others are bolted down.

Stacey, Thanks for your feedback. The physician surveyor considered this a safety issue. This facility has a seclusion/restraint room on each unit. Those beds are bolted to the floor.

I would echo Stavy's comments although we do have some 'Quiet rooms' - use includes seclusion and restraint - rooms with mattress on floor only. We are in the process of developing some sensory rooms on the units as well with both the remodeling and addition of new IP beds. Sue.Offenbecker@pinerest.org

The Joint Commission standards do not go into that level of specificity. This would be a risk assessment issue to be conducted by the hospital. My experience is that bolting beds to the floor is a common and accepted practice for seclusion rooms more than general patient rooms. I’ve provided some attachments* that I hope might be of value on risk assessments and suicide prevention.
