I. State & Psychiatric Hospital Compliance Collaborative (SPHCC)

The SPHCC is an information-sharing network of state and other psychiatric hospitals that focuses on meeting the requirements of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Joint Commission (TJC). The Collaborative is supported by a unique array of online services and facilitated by Associates including former surveyors for both CMS and JC.

II. PPR Assurance

Two-day post-PPR onsite assessment and verification of PPR findings and compliance with the highest risk JC standards performed by three Associates. (This service can also be performed as a training aid for the PPR, but F&A strongly recommends that a facility develop its ability to perform thorough and accurate self-assessments.) Frequency: Annual (Post PPR but prior to submission when possible)

III. Mini-Mock Survey/Readiness Drill

Two-day unannounced exercise performed by two Associates. It is designed to test survey communication and coordination effectiveness, maintain leadership readiness for the opening conference/Leadership Interview and reinforce staff competence with NPSG’s and other tracer skills. This activity can be expanded into a full mock survey of up to four days with three or four Associates if desired. Frequency: Annual (6-9 months prior to PPR?)

IV. Compliance Games

Exercises that reinforce staff knowledge of standards and survey skills. Staff members form multi-disciplinary unit-based teams of three or four and compete with similar teams from other units. The experience is usually more powerful, edifying and enjoyable than mock surveys. Compliance games require one hour per team. They can be implemented as a stand-alone or as a component of survey readiness drills. Frequency: q4-6 months or as desired

V. Offsite Record Reviews

Examination of 10 recently closed records to determine general quality and appropriateness of care and/or compliance with TJC/CMS standards. Frequency: Annual (3-6 months prior to PPR) or more often if desired

VI. Offsite Policy/Document Reviews

Examination of and comment on policies, procedures, medical staff bylaws or other documents for general quality, appropriateness and compliance with TJC/CMS standards. Frequency: PRN

VII. E-Support

Available in 10-hour packets of offsite consultation, Q&A (via telephone or e-mail) to address facility-specific concerns. Frequency: PRN up to 10 hours  [Conference Call Planner]

VIII. Compliance Updates

Sixty-minute facilitated conference calls to provide clarifications, implementation suggestions and strategies for improved TJC/CMS compliance and survey readiness Frequency: Biannual (April and October)
